Laser hybrid welding is a laser welding process where laser welding is combined with a second welding process that together create a single process working in a single weld charge.

Laser hybrid welding is a laser welding process where laser welding is combined with a second process to create a single process. This works with a single weld charge. In most cases, hybrid welding is a combination of laser welding and a MIG/MAG process, but it can also be a combination with TIG or plasma welding.

By combining two processes, the advantages of each one can be combined. It is possible to raise welding speeds (unlike conventional MIG/MAG welding) with a laser hybrid and to bridge over gaps. Furthermore, with the MIG/MAG feeder wire it is possible to add an extra alloy element to the weld charge.

How does it work?

The laser hybrid process uses a laser beam and a MIG/MAG welding arc that both work in the same weld process (see figure below). The laser usually runs ahead and creates the welding depths and stabalizes the arc. The arc welder follows directly behind it, from one to a few millimetres distance from the laser.

The figure below shows a laser welding hybrid in which laser welding optics and a MIG/MAG welding torch are combined.

The figure below clearly shows the combination of laser and a MIG/MAG process. The weld is both deeper and wider.
