Spot Welding

With spot welding, two or more plates are pressed against each other by copper alloy electrodes. The copper alloy electrodes are cooled by water.

During the spot welding process two parts are welded together by pressing them together between two electrodes. The required heat generation is obtained from the electric current and the transfer resistance between the parts to be joined.

Principle of the resistance welding process

During welding heat is generated by the electrical resistance. The greatest heat generation is located where the resistance is highest. This is between the plates to be joined. The force of pressure forces the material together into a single join/weld. The electrodes are cooled in order to reduce wear on them.

AWL Welding Lens

Caps are fitted to electrodes with spot welding. These electrode caps determine the shape of the weld. A spot weld is formed where the caps press against the material. In ISO 4063 the process is referred to as process number 21.
